  • Possibly the only commercial airport in the world where the runway is a beach. This is Barra airport in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland - a small Twin Otter plane lands on the broad sandy beach there approximately twice a day. It is often subject to delays and diversions to nearby Benbecula which has a tarmac runwway. There are no refuelling facilities at Barra, so passenger numbers on the return flight to Glasgow are higher as they have less fuel (13 on the way over, 16 on the return). Quite an exciting flight.
